Latin name: Citrus Nobilis.Part of the plant used: Fruit peel.Source: Italy.Extraction method: Cold pressing.Tangerine essential oil is obtained from Citrus Reticulata, by cold compression of the bark. Mandarin Petitgrain oil is also extracted in small quantities by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs. The oil is orange-yellow and has the aroma of a fresh orange. A whole group of citrus fruits are lumped together under the mandarin name, including satsuma, clementine, dancy, honey, pixie, and tangerine. This oil is very mild so can be used to treat children and pregnant women, one of the few oils to be used in this way. With its tonic and stimulating effect on the stomach and liver, it is useful for digestive problems. Tangerine oil is also useful for treating acne, oily skin, and pimples. It is believed to help relieve problems such as water retention and obesity. The oil, diluted about 1-2% in a carrier oil, is massaged gently on a child's stomach to relieve a stomach ache. A few drops in the bath calm hyperactive children. Tangerines are so called because they were traditionally given as gifts to mandarins in China. In France, tangerine is considered a safe remedy to treat indigestion in children, and for the elderly because it helps strengthen the digestive system and the liver. Native to southern China and the Far East, the mandarin was introduced to Europe in 1805 and to America in 1845.
